What is Quality Leather?
We hear the word ‘quality’ so often that the questions like ‘What does the quality concept mean?’, ‘According to what and by whom is quality determined?’ arise.
Nowadays quality has become a vague concept, the crucial reason of which lies in that companies from all sectors claim their products are of the highest quality. Dependent on the area of the leather use, its processing and composition vary. For instance, durability of a leather jackets does not indicate its quality, as the thickness of very durable leather must be greater thus leading to difficulties in its use. What’s more, a thick and heavy finishing layer even if it looks beautiful covering very small pores doesn’t allow the leather to breathe, which by hindering this most important feature of the leather brings about a harmful product.
According to a product, the leather features we want differ. Waterproof leather is necessary for winter shoes, and with this purpose we use hydrophobic materials in processing and polyurethane binders in finishing. Machines in use, chemicals, climate, raw leather, terms and particularly people determine the product features. The leather sector is the one which is based on the craftsmanship. In processing, experience, capacity and knowledge of workers is very important for goods. The goods (leather jackets, leather handbags) produced with the use of engineering data and the recent technological innovations differ to a great extent from those produced just with the use of practical knowledge.
Nowadays 90 per cent of companies state their products are of the highest quality. Considering the leather sector, the rate doesn’t exceed 2%. The leather manufacturing in a number of enterprises particularly in the countries like China, India and Pakistan and in the developed countries is run with old techniques by uneducated people in inherited enterprises. In preparing the leather for use by means of harmless chemicals such circumstances as at what stage, what amount, under what conditions and to what type of the leather they will be applied require very complicated processes. In the leather processing, to produce original goods appropriate to the trends involves education.
The leather itself is a very quality material and gets actual properties in processing; insufficient processing puts the user in a difficult situation. The second-class products being protected by fashion are sold like the first-class products. Such characteristics as the excess in leather goods, a thin finishing layer, homogeneous color and fur, and the absence of defects determine the leather quality; many defects are put out of sight under the guise of fashion. According to fashion, not production but production determinant for fashion can change the situation.
After appropriate production is made, leather engineers check the product using a number of machines. They study the product characteristics by applying such tests as light fastness, finish adhesion, tensile and tear strength, rub fastness, perspiration fastness, water spotting, flexural strength and if they are not able to find the features they want they once more get into processing and improve the situation.
